Real-World Feedback & Quotes: Hawaii eFoil Extravaganza Winner Tests the XFoil Escape & Adaptive Foil

When you build next-generation eFoil technology, the true test doesn't happen in a laboratory—it happens out on the ocean. We recently sat down with Paul McDonald, the race champion who took home 1st place at the 2025 Hawaii eFoil Extravaganza, to get his unvarnished, real-world feedback after putting the base-model XFoil Escape and our new Adaptive Foil System through its paces in Hawaii waters.

From introducing brand-new riders to pushing high-speed boundary limits, here is what a Hawaii champion has to say about the ride, the battery performance, and the future of accessible foiling.

First Impressions: Premium Aesthetics & Build Quality

Out of the bag, the XFoil Escape makes an immediate impression. Designed to deliver high-end fit and finish without the traditional luxury tax, Paul noted that the attention to detail on the board styling and deck design stood out right away.

"The paint, colors, logo placement, and deck-pad design are top-notch. The board looks great and makes a very good first impression."

In addition to the board styling, Paul highlighted that the included board bag design and pairing experience delivered a smooth, seamless setup right out of the box.

Rock-Solid Connectivity & Wireless Reliability

When you're out in open ocean water, wireless telemetry between your hand controller and the board is paramount for rider safety and control confidence. During his time on the water, Paul experienced total connection stability.

"Pairing the remote with the Escape went smoothly following the instructions, with no hiccups. That was reassuring. The remote-to-board connection has also been rock-solid and reliable so far, which gives me confidence when riding."

Shattering Expectations on Base Battery Runtime

One of the biggest surprises came from testing our standard base-model battery configuration. Many riders assume entry-level battery packs will drain rapidly under high displacement loads—especially when teaching beginners who spend considerable time pushing water before achieving flight.

"Even though I decided not to splurge on upgrades and assume I have the smaller/base battery, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the runtime. Probably 95% of its use so far has been with beginners who aren’t flying yet and are pushing a lot of water with the board, which I would expect to use quite a bit of energy. I was half expecting the battery to be dead within 30–45 minutes, but it has performed much better than that."

The Game-Changer: Adaptive Foil System & Stability Mode

Our engineering focus with the Adaptive Foil system has always been about lowering the learning curve for entry-level riders while retaining active responsiveness for experienced foilists. Paul tested the adaptive system across multiple speed ranges and flight modes.

"I’m impressed. Definitely can tell the difference in all modes this time... The stability mode is amazing, going to be so good for newbies and even I liked it and probably would mostly ride in that mode anyways if I had one. Just so easy... Overall, it’s more polished and user friendly than I expected."

Constructive Insights: Driving Engineering & Evolution

At XFoil, we welcome genuine, transparent feedback from real-world riders to continuously push our platform forward. Paul provided several key technical recommendations that our engineering team is actively analyzing for future iterations:

  • Thermal Management & Hull Color: Paul noted that dark hulls absorb sun heat rapidly during beach assembly and setup. Moving toward lighter hull colorways will help reduce thermal expansion and minimize heat build-up while prepped on shore.
  • Mast-Plate Interface & Sealing: Recommendations were made to tighten tolerances at the mast-to-baseplate junction to ensure ultra-rigid stability and prevent saltwater runoff near electrical contact areas during teardown.
  • Remote Safety Display Wording: Suggested updating remote telemetry text when submerged from "Motor Shutting Down" to "Safety Disarmed" or "Safety On" so riders clearly understand it is a standard safety protocol rather than a fault code.
  • High-Speed Adaptive Trim Tuning: Shared observations on adaptive flap dynamics at 30+ mph, proposing a remote flap-position indicator so advanced riders can fine-tune drag and pitch balance at top speeds.

Building the Future of Accessible Foiling

Getting champion-level feedback from riders like Paul McDonald reinforces why we build what we build: cutting-edge engineering, rock-solid reliability, and incredible flight time accessible to everyone in the foiling community.

We want to give a massive shoutout and thank you to Paul for putting the Escape through its paces, sharing actionable rider insights, and bringing positive energy to the water!
